BROWNSBURG, Ind. (August 1, 2022) – It was an all but perfect weekend for Donny Schatz and Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing, securing not only one, but two podium performances in Weedsport Speedway’s Empire State Challenge, one of which a victory to conclude the weekend’s doubleheader on Sunday, July 31.
Schatz, ace of the Advance Auto Parts, Carquest, Ford Motor Company, Ford Performance, Curb Records, Sage Fruit, Digital Ally, Absolute Automation and Security, Hunt Brothers Pizza, Elliott’s Custom Trailers and Carts, No. 15 sprint car, led all 30 circuits on Sunday night, securing his second victory of the 2022 season – his first in 42 races – as well as his third overall at Weedsport. Impressive enough, Schatz swept the evening’s preliminary events; setting quick time, followed by heat race and dash victories.
The ten-time World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion and Fargo, North Dakota, native, is now a 304-time World of Outlaws winner, forced to outduel David Gravel and Logan Schuchart to secure his additional winning tally.
“In my 26 years, I was always taught to worry about what is in front of you, and not what is behind you,” Schatz said of his mindset. “As long as I’m doing things right, then it’s their job to pass me so I’m not going to change what I’m doing for what hasn’t impacted me yet.”
One night prior, Schatz finished second, maintaining his place on the podium after starting in the exact same position.
“You hear fans talk about how unique this Weedsport is, but I wish you could see it from our perspective,” Schatz said on the track’s layout. “It’s just different. You have to be on your game 110% of the time and that makes it a ton of fun to race. I’m glad we could pick up another win here.”
ON DECK:
Donny Schatz and Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing will continue their 2022 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series campaign with the annual Ironman 55 at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 in Pevely, Missouri, on Friday and Saturday, August 5-6. The two-day showcase will award $8,000 on Friday and $20,000 on Saturday; Saturday’s finale will go 55-laps in distance.
